Every so often an act of true heroism occurs. More frequent are the small acts of compassion which we take for granted. Altruism defies the darker picture of humanity often presented in the news.Hunt, a social science writer, examines the phenomenon by raising such critical questions as what makes an altruist and what situations inhibit or promote such behavior. He then summarizes notable research which is beginning to provide answers. His survey is well-illustrated with examples of heroism, including an impressive study on altruism during the Holocaust. Hunt's suggestions for encouraging altruism through pro-social education are intriguing. A useful addition for most public libraries.
