Examines the modern history of the sport of swimming, discussing technique, training, and coaching, and presents portraits of four young Olympians and a preview of competitors in the 1988 summer Olympic games

The author concentrates on the swimming facility at Mission Viejo, Calif., coach Mark Schubert, considered one of the best in the U.S., and the outstanding athletes who train there, either regularly or sporadically. Chambliss, a sociology professor at Hamilton College in New York, observes that coaches determine their level of achievement by choosing their level of expectations, and that Schubert, for one, expects nothing but the best, demanding complete dedication to the sport and rigorous training. The author focuses on four swimmers in the Olympic year of 1984, all of whom acquitted themselves brilliantly, and provides details on the techniques they used to develop excellence. Of special interest is an epilogue previewing those who will be swimming in Seoul this year and assessing their prospects. Photos not seen by PW.

Chambliss has written neither a technical manual nor a glorifying memoir, but instead presents a "news-reelish" coverage of a sport that will appeal to the general reader rather than to swimming enthusiasts only. In a conversational style, he highlights the career development of such Olympic swimmers as Mike O'Brien, Dara Torres, Rowdy Gaines, and Mary Meagher under the direction of coach Mark Schubert. In attempting to portray the human quality of the athletes and coaches, Chambliss dips freely into their private lives. The book has been published to coincide with the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.
