From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1-- Pit and Pat, the feline protagonists of What If? (Greenwillow, 1987), are back in a springtime flight of fancy in which each claims to be happy enough to jump over an ever-escalating series of hurdles culminating in the sun and the moon. Finally, they decide to be content with jumping over one another and do so happily "because it was spring." The story is almost too simple, but there is a child-like charm to the boastful cats and their ready acceptance of their limitations after their heady imaginings. Graham's illustrations, too, are simple and child-like. Pit and Pat seem effortlessly suspended in air over a sun and moon which smile benevolently. Blues and greens evoke springtime as the two cats cavort through meadows of spring flowers. The repetitive text makes this very easy to read so that it might be equally well used with beginning readers and young preschoolers. --Louise L. Sherman, Anna C. Scott School, Leonia, N.J.
