Reviews

Grade 5-8 The string games in this book, as in Gryski's other two (Cat's Cradle, Owl's Eyes 1984 and Many Stars and More String Games 1985, both Mor row) have been collected from all around the world. Basic instructions are given on how to prepare the string; terminology and the naming of fingers and loops are included. At first glance, the string games seem complicated, but by reading the step-by-step instruc tions, which are clearly illustrated with ink drawings of hands and red arrows pointing directions to move the string, readers can make the string games suc cessfully. Similar string game books are available, such as Jayne's String Fig ures and How to Make Them (Dover, 1906) and Cat's Cradles and Other String Figures (Penguin, 1980; o.p.) by Elffers and Schuyt. The instructions and illustrations in Gryski's book are the easiest to follow.Sue E. Hamil ton, Jackson County Library, Medford, Oreg.
