Going off to school, Edward tells his brother Tom to take care of things, so Tom takes care of the swings, bikes, toys, cat, and dog by treating them all as his brother would want them treated

PreSchool-Grade 2-- Buckley focuses on a first-day-of-school drama from the perspective of a sibling left at home. Tom is faced with a long, lonely day when Edward goes back to school. To fill his time, the preschooler swings both swings, rides his bike and walks his brother's two-wheeler, cares for the family pets, and assures the turtle (and himself) that "Edward will be home before you know it." By lunchtime, Tom has been playing so intently that he is disappointed in himself for forgetting his brother's parting charge, to "take care of things" while he's gone. Wise Mrs. Henderson, the housekeeper, assures the youngster that he's done just that, and the boys have a joyful reunion at day's end. Coville's sepia pen-and-ink and watercolor paintings engage readers on the title page and usher them right into the familiar morning routine of a busy family. They expand the pleasing story and are appealing in spite of a few awkward proportions. The pets are the best drawn of all, involving themselves in every activity. This book will find its most enthusiastic audience among preschoolers, who will empathize with Tom, or in the early elementary grades where the memory of being left to "take care of things" is still vivid. --Lisa S. A preschooler's first day with his babysitter and several pets when his much-admired older brother goes back at school. After a busy morning of helpful and creative activities, little Tom's afraid he hasn't done what Edward asked as he got on the bus; nice Mrs. Henderson helps Tom realize that he has. Unassuming but just right, with well-drawn, sympathetic illustrations that nicely reflect the story's warmth and realism. (Tom seems to be Oriental; other characters, including Mom and Dad, are Caucasian.) (Picture book. 3-7) -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
