PreSchool-Grade 1 Despite a sound defeat in The Ogre and the Frog King (Greenwillow, 1988), in Solotareff's latest book the red-headed monster with a curly beard, pointed nose, and fangs is hard at it, chasing the forest animals and eating them (having eaten his own family already). When he tires of the chase, the ogre decides to use a ruse. He pretends to reform, and lures the animals to his house for a Friendship Dinner. Two frogs, having eaten, spot the ogre's hunting knife in his pocket, and on this circumstantial evidence the animals launch a pre-emptive strike, jumping on their host, pulling his hair, biting him on the nose, and smashing his crockery. The ogre contemplates a vegetarian meal, while the animals happily assure one another that they will never trust the ogre again. The pictures are amusing, their broken black lines recalling primitive woodcuts married to a flat design, but the tale falls flat, lacking both originality and a satisfying structure.
