Reviews

PreSchool-K-- Originally published with illustrations by Roger Duvoisin (Lothrop, 1949; o.p.), this title is given new life by a newcomer to the field. Tresselt, in his lyrical prose, presents a day on a farm, a blistering hot day given reprieve by a thundering storm. The farm has been modernized, but the simplicity and serenity of the setting remain. Cows and chickens dot the landscape as a boy and his dog fish by the shadows of a nearby pond. The mood is lazy, as the easy pace of the day is dictated by the weather. Each expansive page glows with a light so pure that readers can almost feel the heat of the pulsing sun and be relieved once the rain arrives, turning the parched, dusty earth into cool mud. Sorensen's naturalistic oil paintings help children feel a part of this special day-by-day world. Kids today might be impatient with such a slow meandering, but they will be rewarded by the immediacy of this world in which animals and people are given equal consideration. --Martha Topol, Interlochen Public Library, MI
