PreSchool-Grade 2-- In this simple approach to a complex subject, children are introduced to the concept of telling time. Boldly colored photos follow a little boy's daily activities as each double-page spread advances the clock by one hour. On the left, readers are shown a large clock in the boy's room. The lower left corner of the page shows a digital display as well. This not only familiarizes children with different kinds of clocks, but also introduces the concept of A.M. and P.M. On the right-hand photo, they see the boy engaged in a different activity for each hour. These photos have a joyous, spontaneous look, just right for drawing youngsters into the book. While the concept of quarter and half hours is only mentioned at the end of the book, the two photos on the last page can be used as a transition into individual instruction. The appealing and effective layout, combined with McMillan's photographic expertise, make this a welcome addition to all libraries serving young children. --Lori A. Remember that buoyant feeling of triumph when you first grasped the concept of time? Photographer McMillan obviously does, and his new book is designed to give a boost to any child still puzzling over it. In each pair of bright full-color photos, a clock on the left-hand page shows the hour with, on the right, a corresponding activity from a child's daily routine (breakfast, school, brushing teeth, etc.). A digital display (on the bottom left corner of the left-hand page) introduces the idea of a.m. and p.m. as well. McMillan's carefully planned layouts and fresh, appealing images are a model of clarity, but it's his attention to detail (matching the gradual changes in shading and accessories on the left-hand pages to the shifting movement of the sun) that makes this such a splendid book. Interesting background on the photographer's materials and methods is included at the end. Ages 3-7.
