This is a personal, even idiosyncratic collection of recipes said to comfort or heal. Included are remedies prepared by the author's mother and various concoctions collected as Waldron traveled the world visiting markets and investigating folk and traditional medical treatments. The first part ranges from recipes for bread pudding (a comforter) to various uses for ginger (for colds, headaches, and motion sickness). Chicken soup for colds is not neglected, with three recipes included. Following this potpourri is an alphabetical list of "feel-good foods" with recipes for each and a list of herbs and spices with descriptions of their healing powers. The book ends with a list of ailments and suggestions for treating them with foods and herbs; however, there are few cross references here to the recipes in the front section. While this book offers tips on holistic approaches to healing common complaints, it's difficult to separate Waldron's personal folklore from traditional medicine based on collective experience or her anecdotal data from scientific facts. As other books offer a more thorough and organized approach, this is an optional purchase.

Beautifully written by former McCall's food editor and advertising executive Waldron, this aptly titled book offers an assortment of foods that may comfort, revive or alleviate what ails us. The book interweaves the author's travels and personal experiences with her interest in natural foods and herbs, providing recipes with a natural-foods bent, some borrowed from outstanding restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area. Especially memorable are vegetable soup purees from Joyce Goldstein's Square One restaurant and honeycomb bean-curd soup from Barbara Tropp's China Moon. Waldron also features many of her own contributions: buttermilk vichyssoise with borage and beets, mushroom barley soup without beef, and daikon radish miso soup. She makes a very clear disclaimer about her stand on food and health: her "suggestions are in no way meant to supplant medical advice but rather to aid your body in strengthening itself." Nevertheless, readers will be both impressed and amused by her advice. Illustrations not seen by PW.
