Like Chaikin, Koralek has retold the story of how Hanukkah came to be celebrated. Her version fleshes out more dramatically the desecration of the temple, the family of Mattathias, and their slow but steady battle with the evil Antiochus. A final page details and illustrates a modern family lighting the candles in celebration of the religious aspects of the holiday. Wijngaard frames each picture and the text solidly in marblelike pedestals and lintels. Amply shaded dark colors give the paintings the antique look of hand-tinted old prints but make them more difficult to use with a group. The Story of Hanukkah (Dial, 1989) by Amy Ehrlich is still the best combination of text and illustration for story hours, but both Chaikin's and Koralek's versions work well in family and small group settings.
