Surveys the history of boxing through the eyes of its greatest trainers, revealing the behind-the-scenes violence and corruption as well as intimate portraits of the fighters

Corner men assist boxers between rounds, and sometimes act as trainers and managers as well. In these two offerings, New York Times columnist Anderson and TV writer/boxing fanatic Fried profile the sport's most prolific corner men. Anderson features chapters on 12 of boxing's best, while Fried covers nine. Only three appear concurrently (Angelo Dundee, Ray Arcel, and Eddie Futch). Picking boxing's greatest fighters is highly subjective because great pugilists sometimes fought in different eras, and rarely engaged one another during their primes. The same is true for corner men, since different eras often meant different rules (e.g., the recent promulgation of the Three Knockdown Rule, which ends a bout immediately after a fighter is felled three times) and different medicines were available (or allowed) during bouts to repair ailing fighters. All the trainers profiled by Anderson and Fried are worthy of being called "great." Hence, both books are recommended as fine additions to boxing collections. However, if only one can be purchased, Anderson's In the Corner wins a majority decision on the basis of its superior prose.

These taped reminiscences by a dozen of the best current boxing trainers give the flavor of the "sweet science" more purely than any champion's biography has, for these are the men who created the champions. New York Times columnist Anderson begins with Kevin Rooney, who devotes much of his interview to the late Cus D'Amato, the discover, developer and surrogate father of Mike Tyson. The highlight of the book, however, is the contribution of 92-year-old Ray Arcel, trainer of 18 champions. All of the men agree: great fighters make great trainers, and brains, heart, meanness and a willingness to listen (a commodity evidently in short supply) make for great fighters. Ring fans will love this collection. Photos not seen by PW.
