From Publishers Weekly:
This offbeat picture book features a flock of zany hens busily preparing for a great occasion--the laying of their millionth egg. As the moment approaches, a hysterical hen, Rhoda, announces that the farmer is planning to tear down their beloved barn and build a restaurant. The frazzled fowl nearly dissolve in self-pity until (the now energized) Rhoda proposes a puzzling solution: "I'll write a play." When the farmer views their hastily mounted production--which concerns a group of hens displaced when their "home" is sold--he is overcome with emotion and tearfully promises never to part with the barn. The chickens cheer, and soon cheer again as Celia hen lays the millionth egg. All live happily ever after, working together at the farmer's new "EGGS-press CAFE." Humorous asides add to the fun, and cartoony line drawings highlighted with splashes of watercolors aptly portray the goofy chickens. Ages 5-8.

From School Library Journal:
Kindergarten-Grade 3-- A fast-paced, tongue-in-cheek story told primarily in dialogue. As a group of chickens prepares to celebrate the laying of their millionth egg, their owner announces that he's going to tear down the barn to build a restaurant. Luckily Rhoda, the wisest in the roost, writes a play about the chickens' plight. The farmer is reduced to tears, the barn is saved, and he and his feathered friends open up a small restaurant together. The black-line cartoons are boldly painted with wide sweeps of a brush and what appears to be finger painting. Although each illustration is busy with activity, the openness in the unframed pictures, the fluid lines of the drawings, and plenty of white space make for a clean, uncluttered look. The humor and eye-catching art will appeal especially to young fans of James Stevenson's stories in comic-book format. --Danita Nichols, New York Public Library
