Grade 2-5-- As a result of his mother's peace project, young Joe Schulten and his family are invited to travel from their home in Atlanta, Georgia to the Georgian Republic in the Soviet Union. This book is a pictorial record of Joe's trip. The color photographs, which vary from good to excellent in quality, include coverage of the family home in which Joe lived during his stay, a Georgian bakery oven, a typical dinner, a Russian classroom, a chess house, a video arcade, and a Georgian feast. Written in Joe's voice, the style is clear, straightforward, and friendly as he describes his experiences and feelings. Details will be of interest to intermediate children and will help them share Joe's experience. They will also learn interesting facts about everyday life in this Russian republic. There is even a very brief overview of Georgian history. The numerous photographs, wide margins, and large print on glossy paper make this an attractive volume that should be useful in social studies discussions. --Rosie Peasley, Somerset School, Modesto, CA
