In a simple world where the sky is always blue and problems are easily solved, Stan looks after his farm and respects the needs of his wild animal neighbors. In The Day Patch Stood Guard , Duncan rolls down a hill and crashes into a tree. Patch watches over the tractor until all repairs are completed. In The Day Sidney Ran Off , Stan hops on Duncan to follow a runaway pig, ultimately ending up in a puddle. While the stories unfold with little attention-grabbing drama, their child appeal is assured by the winning personalities of the animals and the major role played by the tractor. Lively cartoon-style watercolors add much; the drawings, in various sizes, capture the action and nuances of the stories. A pictorial highlight is the map of the countryside on the endpapers. Language is simple, but colorful. Beginning readers will be able to master the short sentences, although they will need some help with some unusual words.
