One evening in Phoenix, an accident of time and place brought Suzanne Rossetti, a charming, trusting young woman, together with two drifters, Michael Logan and Jesse James Gillies. She had locked herself out of her car and the two men offered help. In turn, Rossetti bought them a pack of beer and offered a ride. Logan and Gillies, both psychopaths with long criminal records, first wanted her money but then spontaneously escalated their crimes until ultimately they had abducted Rossetti, raped her five times, and finally threw her down a ravine in the Superstition Mountains, where they stoned her and left her to die. Watkins, an adult probation officer responsible for writing pre-sentencing reports, including reports on Gillies and Logan, has done an admirable job in researching the lives of the protagonists and in re-creating the murder of Rossetti and the capture and trial of the men. However, Evil Intentions reads like a pre-sentence report itself, lacking a sense of excitement or impending doom. It is written totally in the past tense, with only dialog from the trial transcript and odd juxtapositions of information causing confusion. Not recommended.
