Arnosky has created a simple volume for the very youngest nature lovers. The book's real lesson comes not from the sparse, descriptive text, but from the illustrations. Hoof prints on the inside cover and title page prepare children for the deer's appearance; close-ups of the deer provide an awesome treat. A singing thrush, soaring swallows, jeweled butterfly, leaping fish, spindly damselflies, nest-building sparrowall appear in Arnosky's very realistic two-page softly colored pencil drawings.
