Reynolds, author of five other books on "constructive living" including A Thousand Waves (Quill: Morrow, 1990), shows Westerners how to use a blend of two Eastern psychotherapies: Naikan, which stresses gratitude for all of life, and Mor ita , which concerns problem solving. Both practices are rooted in the Zen tradition. Reynolds feels Western therapy wastes too much time and energy getting in touch with feelings and underlying causes. Simple behavioral changes, he maintains, are what really matters. "What needs doing is to have a goal, to accept whatever uncontrollable factors come along . . . and to work toward that goal," he states. To facilitate this shift in emphasis, he provides theory, exercises, maxims, and mythical and true stories, all designed to move the mind from emotional self-absorption to positive, constructive action. This is an excellent example of Zen therapy in practice. Recommended for libraries with reader interest.
