Expert black-ink stippling, shading, and detail lend depth and perspective to the pastel watercolors. The last picture springs a gentle surprise that will surely bring smiles of delight to youngsters: the farmer's wife has had twins. A soft, comforting, pastoral glimpse of spring.

Ages 2-5. The pastel and pen-and-ink pictures catch the fuzzy, first-growth quality of spring flora and fauna in an appropriately clear, seasonal light. The title phrase introduces a narrative that chronicles a series of farm births, with each double-page spread showing a mother and her young, which are specifically named (foal, gosling, etc.).
