PreSchool-Grade 3-- Joel is newly adopted, and his arrival at the airport is eagerly awaited by the young narrator. "A new baby is better than a party," she comments. She has all kinds of plans to greet her parents' best friends' baby. She especially looks forward to holding him before anyone else, as George, Joel's new father, has promised. The placement and pacing of these watercolor and colored-pencil drawings do an admirable job of sustaining tension, adding small detail after detail, building toward the wonderful moment when Joel's extended family wait, arm in arm, side by side at the arrival gate. Their backs are toward readers and concentration is fully on the startled, tired, delighted parents who emerge holding their son. The group portraits shine with the joy of community and family life.
