From School Library Journal

Grade 1-3-- In the Biblical world of saints and superheroes, Jonah-the-reluctant strikes a very human note. His attempt to escape from the voice of God precipitates a great adventure: shipwreck and an insider's look at a whale. Patterson's double-page spreads acknowledge the drama in the tale. His approach is selectively realistic: the amphorae in the cargo look right, but the whale has sharks' teeth and a 60-foot esophagus. More questionable license is taken with the details of the story: Jonah is introduced as ``a lazy man'' at odds with his neighbors, an unhappy misfit. None of these qualities is implied by the text, but a more serious problem is that nothing is subsequently made of them in the retelling. Inside the whale, Jonah tells God, ``I trust you to look after me, and I will do what you ask.'' Unimpeachable sentiments, but no rival to the beauty of the original prayer in Jonah. Nor does this version rival the beauty and fidelity of Warwick Hutton's Jonah and the Great Fish (Atheneum, 1984). --Patricia Dooley, University of Washington, Seattle
