Grade 3-5-Arnold and Hewett once again combine talents to produce two attractive, informative photo essays. In Elephant, Arnold uses the captives of Marine World Africa USA in California to explain the physical characteristics of both Asian and African species, as well as their habits and behavior. The closing section of the book describes the long association elephants have had with humans, dating from prehistoric times. Monkey is a delightful introduction that focuses on "Little Dude," a red-crowned mangabey at the Los Angeles Zoo. The characteristics and habits common to all monkeys, as well as those that are unique to the mangabeys are described. Both texts are accompanied by one or two superb, full-color photos per page, including many fascinating closeups. Cynthia Overbeck's Elephants and Monkeys (both 1981, Lerner) present the same basic textual information, but the photos aren't of the same caliber.
