Three squirrels looking for excitement in their lives try to pull together an acrobatics act for the circus that is coming to their part of the forest

Stevenson, whose career as both an author-illustrator of children's books and a cartoonist for the New Yorker underscores the versatility of his humor, here presents a story that will make readers of any generation chuckle. Three snails looking for excitement find just that when they come upon The Flying Acorns, three squirrels who are aspiring acrobats. As the tiny snails watch--and offer a hilarious running commentary--the trio tries in vain to perfect somersaults and leaps from trees so they can perform in a circus. Finally, the squabbling squirrels give up, and two stomp off. The third, Jerry, posts a sign in hopes of recruiting new acrobats, but instead concocts an act starring the snails, who not only fly through the air but sing in three-part harmony ("Tonight, you're going in there as snails, but you're coming back as stars ," quips Jerry). Their performance is wildly successful, as is Stevenson's in this waggish tale. With his familiar comic-book style illustrations and wry wit (though occasionally tinged with an adult sensibility), Stevenson serves up nuts of a high order indeed. Ages 5-up.

Kindergarten-Grade 2-- Three vacationing singing snails, a bored yet persistent squirrel named Jerry, and a circus in need of good acts form the heart of this rollicking tale. As with Stevenson's "Emma the Witch" books (Greenwillow), the story is told strictly through dialogue balloons. Many pages are broken into four panels so at times the chatty characters' speech overwhelms the pen-and-watercolor pictures. However, through continous pacing and an overriding deadpan delivery, humor wins out. A large cast of supporting creatures, from a drum-playing rabbit to a frog, a porcupine, and a beaver, rounds out the story. Each animal has a different talent, and not all are equipped to try Jerry's high-flying stunts, but eventually they find their appropriate niches. By the end of the book, readers, like the snails, will have moved from being bystanders to participators as everyone takes part in the "Great Turkey Bros. Circus." --Martha Topol, Northwestern Michigan College, Traverse City, MI
