Children, their parents, and teachers will find many satisfying alternatives to television in this well-arranged, attractive book. Careful, step-by-step instructions are accompanied by illustrations of the procedures. Lively cartoon characters play cards, mix up play dough, and generally enjoy themselves. Although many of these activities can be found in other sources, and portions of this book originally appeared in the authors' other publications, Cole and Calmenson have added both variations and new activities to the mix. Gr. 3^-5. This hefty compendium of things to do provides many choices. The format is just as attractive as in previous books by this trio, and with good reason. As a note on the verso of the title page states, "Portions of this book first appeared in Anna Banana: 101 Jump-Rope Rhymes; Crazy Eights: And Other Card Games; Miss Mary Mack: and Other Children's Street Rhymes; Six Sick Sheep: 101 Tongue Twisters; and Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road? Besides chapters on jump rope rhymes, card games, street rhymes, tongue twisters, and riddles, the book contains sections that feature paper crafts, arts and crafts, word games, brainteasers, paper-and-pencil games, magic tricks, and "string things."
