From Booklist

Ages 2-4. Goennel's plain text and bright, simple acrylic illustrations celebrate the daily activities of being a small boy: splashing in puddles, imagining he's a cowboy, licking all the icing in the bowl, playing with a best friend, reading under the covers. The child is nearly always at the center of the framed, full-page picture, but Goennel plays with the child's perspective, bringing vitality to the clearly defined shapes and figures. Compared with Penguin and Teddy, the boy is a giant, but in another picture, he can make a snowman "even taller than I am." When he goes fishing, the landscape is dominant; when he stands in his treehouse, the sky is all around. A book to show young children who need to be convinced that books can be about their own world. Hazel Rochman

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-This title enumerates (in a seemingly arbitrary order) typical activities of many young children-licking icing from a bowl, making a snowman, and going fishing, among them. Goennel uses her trademark stylized illustrations-acrylic on canvas in simplified, flat shapes to form featureless faces on nongender-specific figures placed on uncluttered backgrounds. There is a strong sense of design and intentional placement of shapes, and the simplified pictures are well suited to young children. This is a quiet book without plot or expression of feeling, but preschoolers will identify with the experiences.
