Even complacent Sherwood, who is certain that he's completely ready for the holiday, must make an emergency adjustment when the ribbon he bought rolls away. The charm of Mud Flat rests in its blend of the quirky (the village's tiniest member ends up playing Santa) and the winsomely mundane. Of course, Stevenson heightens the story with droll humor and freewheeling watercolor and pen-and-ink drawings, in which each stroke of the pen adds another twinkle of character.
