A college coach under pressure to produce a winner is the theme of this rousing football story. How to do so with a quarterback who runs scared is the dilemma.
Chuck Pearce had been coach for six years without a championship, and the alumni were laying his job on the line. His quarterback was a superb passer named Larry Hudson, who for compelling personal reasons was afraid to run with the ball. as a last resort, Pearce agreed to use him as a passing specialist, hoping the team would accept the arrangement because of Larry's skill. And it almost worked—until the tense moment in a hard-fought game when Larry downed the ball to avoid a tackle. With the alumni on his back, the team in rebellion, and Larry about to quit, Pearce had reason to wonder if he'd been running scared too when he struck such a bargain.
Exciting play-by-play description brings the football field vividly alive. Readers will be caught up and carried along, sharing equally the moments of gloom and triumph.
