Reviews

Grade 5-8 Devastated by a mid-term transfer to an unfamiliar high school, Ginger is sure that the remainder of her freshman year will be a friendless disaster. When she arrives at Alcott High, one of the first people she meets is her new locker partner, Doylita, seemingly the most popular girl at school. Ginger ingratiates herself with Doylita by doing things that she knows are wrong, especially shoplifting at a local department store and keeping silent about Doylita's thefts. Ginger gets into serious trouble before her common sense and good judgment lead her to her real friends. This book is obviously a condemnation of shoplifting, but it gains depth with its comments about friendship and independent thinking. The main characters are realistically portrayed, as are the minor adult characters. Donna S. Rodda, Solon City Schools, Ohio
