Grade 7-10 Rod and his sister Julie unwillingly accompany their parents on a summer vacation to the Southeastern mountains instead of on a promised trip to the beach because their mother is still recovering from an automobile accident. When the too-small cabin proves uncomfortable, a neighbor suggests that her own two teenagers and Rod and Julie try living in an old abandoned cabin down the road. They are supervised there by a local man who is tracking the murderer of his cousin, who is also suspected of hauling and storing hazardous waste. All too soon a confrontation occurs with nearly disastrous results. This brief novel contains implausibly permissive parents, wildly heroic teenagers, a villain who is almost comically evil, improbable events, shallow philosophising, regional stereotypes and a snarl of loose ends. Adventure story lovers would better spend their time reading novels by Thomas Dygard or Raboo Rodgers. Barbara Chatton, College of Education, University of Wyoming, Laramie
