Grade 7-12 This lighthearted and highly readable book is packed full of practical hints for surmounting that most feared hurdle, the public speech. Detz deals with everything from getting past initial excuses and terror to using audiovisual aids successfully. She tells how to analyze an audience and gear the speech to fit it, as well as how to gather and organize material. Tips on interviewing and specific methods of controlling nervousness are direct and to the point. The book is well organized, and specific topics are easy to spot while scanning it. Detz includes an excellent annotated list of useful reference books and a thorough discussion of AV aids, their pros and cons, and tips for use. (Curiously, she neglects to include the overhead transparency, the aid perhaps most abused by speakers.) Refer those needing more depth than Detz' brief treatment to Steve Allen's How to Make a Speech (McGraw-Hill, 1986) or Herbert Prochnow's The Public Speaker's Treasure Chest (Harper, 1977).
