Reviews

Grade 4-6-- This seasonal activity book is similar in format and style to Markle's Exploring Winter (1984) and Exploring Summer (1987, both Atheneum) . A variety of information, experiments, games, and crafts invite readers to appreciate the events of the season. Chapters are developed around specific topics: signs of spring, animal behavior, plants, weather patterns, holidays. A contemporary writing style gives clear directions and basic information with a touch of humor; simple line drawings provide supportive illustrations. Readers can gain information, become more astute observers of changes in nature, or participate in the experiments and crafts. From learning how an egg develops within a chicken to wildflower identification, from making pinwheels to answering riddles relating to spring--there is something of interest for everyone. Teachers are sure to find an activity to wake up their science classes as the natural world awakens to spring. --Diane Nunn, Richard E. Byrd Elementary School, Glen Rock, NJ
