Grade 3-5-- A well-organized, substantial overview of invertebrates. First explaining the major distinction between animals with and without backbones, Loewer then takes each phylum in the class in order from simplest to most complex. Three pages of text are allotted to each of the 11 phyla. Dense, rich pencil drawings dominate every page. Chapters begin with a full-page pencil illustration that often includes a Caucasian child discovering the animals, plus several species highlighted in a box. The book is thorough for its intended audience and scope, illustrated with vigor and energy. The bibliography of adult references is annotated. Glossary definitions use direct, clear language. This is more complete than Elizabeth Shepherd's No Bones (Macmillan, 1988); Selsam's A First Look at Animals without Backbones (Walker, 1976) is much simpler .
