Grade 4-7-- A slick , glossy gallery of 27 of baseball's greatest longball smashers, arranged in reverse chronological order. An introductory essay traces the transition from the pre-1910 ``deadball'' era, when hitters slapped singles through gaps in the infield, to the age of the great slugger, typified by Babe Ruth and sustained today by crunchers like Jose Canseco and Bo Jackson. The design is a pleasing combination of text and photographs, many of which are full color. Each profile succinctly captures the man's unique physical presence at the plate. A purist may dispute the inclusion of still-active George Brett, a great hitter not especially known for home runs, in favor of Hall of Famer Frank Robinson, fourth on the all-time homer list. But any ``greatest'' list invites argument and most of the famous names in swat--Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle--are here. A listing of leaders in individual statistical categories and an explanation of how they are compiled appear in a useful appendix.
