Feeling unwanted and unappreciated, Rosie the rabbit decides to run away from home, but she soon realizes that she will miss her parents and her little brother, Fat Mat

PreSchool-Grade 1-- Rosie, the older child in a rabbit family, feels unloved when a new baby takes up all of Mama's time. She packs her pajamas, doll, and candy; crosses the creek; and settles where she can see home but no one can see her. Then she remembers that her father and the baby will miss her jokes and peek-a-boo. When she returns home, her mother invites Rosie to help bake pies. Rosie's coy expression shows exactly how pleased she is. This is a comfortable story presented in a small format. Pretty watercolor illustrations aid the characterizations of the pudgy rabbit family. Rosie's home glows with warm pastel yellows, and the garden and surrounding woods are lush with leafy shrubs and trees. The text is simple and sufficient to tell the story, but sometimes the sentences are choppy: "Maybe Mama did not need Rosie. But Daddy did. And Fat Mat did." Beginning readers will have little trouble with the short sentences and large type, and young listeners will enjoy the pictures of Rosie and her sweet surroundings. --Nancy Seiner, The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh

Any child who has ever felt misunderstood or unappreciated will sense an instant kinship with Rosie, a winsome rabbit whose baby brother, Fat Mat, has taken over the household. In an effort to be helpful, Rosie carts her brother off on a mud pie-making and blueberry-picking expedition--with predictably grubby results. Mama, needless to say, is not pleased; Rosie is sent to her room to play, but elects instead to run away. From her vantage point just over the brook, Rosie thinks things over and decides that, even if Mama doesn't need her, Daddy and Fat Mat do. Upon her return, she finds Mama does need and love her after all. Macdonald's reassuring look at sibling rivalry is played out against the sunny backdrop of Sweet's idyllic, summery watercolors. Ages 4-7.
