To escape the stew pot of the Four Frightful Troll Brothers, T. Thomas Terwillig tries to engage them in a series of games intended to last until the sun rises to destroy them

From School Library Journal:
Kindergarten-Grade 2-- A mediocre book at best. T. Thomas Terwillig the Third stays out past sundown and is captured by trolls who come out at night looking for tender bodies to eat. Thomas, however, is very clever and tricks the trolls into staying outside until sunrise. It is unfortunate that Day's watercolor drawings, defined by pen and ink, are stiff and static, thus lacking the movement and excitement necessary to portray the characters' actions. The illustrations also come across with a sense of sameness. If not for the obvious hints such as an owl sitting in a tree or the moon shining in the sky, it is difficult to detect from the drawings that all this is taking place at night. It is this same problem that makes it hard to tell if characters are moving or stationary, happy or sad. Even the writing is choppy and lacks a comfortable rhythm. The only attribute here is the familiar fairy-tale-like theme of the good outsmarting the evil, which is likely to appeal to children. --Rachel Fox, Port Washington Public Library, NY
