After the death of her parents, Rachel goes to live with her grandparents in the Appalachian Mountains, but the onset of the Civil War brings new responsibilities, conflicting loyalties, tragedy, and romance to her

Set in Tennessee before and during the Civil War, this historical novel is an absorbing, old-fashioned romance. Its heroine, Rachel, an orphan at age 14, has left the city to join her extended family in the Appalachian Mountains. Though welcomed there by her spirited and self-sufficient grandparents, Rachel chafes at traditional "hope chest" parties and wonders if she, like other mountain women, will one day be expected to "follow the man." As the war years pass, she studies mountain medicine with her neighbor, Granny Sharp, tending the pregnant and the sick by riding her horse to their scattered homes. Finally, she falls in love with a soldier, a Yankee who returns to her, her people and the land at the end of the war. This satisfying conclusion to Rachel's story has the overtones of a beginning, and suggests a worthwhile sequel.

Grade 7-9 Two months after her parents die in a fire, Rachel Sutton joins her grandparents and other kin she has never known. Set during the Civil War, this story of Tennessee mountain life takes Rachel from beginning adolescence to love and a marriage proposal. She learns the skills of Granny Sharp, the mountain medicine woman, and takes over the doctoring after Granny's death. Unfortunately, Kassem's story line is weakened by too many underdeveloped subplots. The midwife theme is brought in late in the novel and is not fully developed; a troublesome cousin is conveniently married off; and Rachel's love interest, a Yankee soldier, miraculously reappears at the end of the story. Too many dangling strings keep this from being a successful book. Therese Bigelow, Hampton Public Library, Va.
