Reviews

Kindergarten-Grade 2 All too often mischievous children find themselves facing the consequences of their actions, and this story is a wonderful example of that experience. Leopold, a black cat, and Lena, a little girl, are close friends, but when Lena recieves a toy mouse for her birthday, Leopold refuses to play with it. He then tells Lena a story about a kitten named Bobo who was always into everything and who would hurry away just before his mother returned. The disasters he left were blamed on his younger brothers and sisters, who were scolded and punished. One day a real mouse is brought home and Bobo swallows it whole and suffers the worst stomachache ever. Lena realizes that Bobo and Leopold are one and the same and why Leopold doesn't want to play with her toy mouse. This simple, comical tale is complemented with watercolor paintings in soft, pleasant hues. Perhaps the best part of the book is the expressions of the cats as they perform their mischievous deeds, especially the terrible faces that Bobo makes after he swallows the real mouse. An amusing story in which young children are sure to delight and which would be especially well received in a storytime setting. Carol McMichael, Greenfield Public Library, Ind.
