Not fond of carrots, a rabbit investigates the diet of other animals, only to find out that carrots are quite good after all

PreSchool-Grade 2 Mr. Rabbit does not like carrots and sets out to poll his neigh bors on their favorite foods. The litany that follows is stiff and predictable, ending with fox's ``I eat rabbit,'' whereupon fox bites off Mr. Rabbit's ears. Mr. Rabbit rushes home and cooks up a pot of carrot stew, ``because carrots make rabbits' ears grow.'' But, at book's end, his ears have not grown, although he has developed a taste for carrot stew. Bold color and vigorous line make Boujon's illustrations livelier than his words, but not enough to over come the lackluster text of this bland book. Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar (Putnam, 1981) makes a similar point in a much more effective and appealing manner. And Mr. Rab bit's mutilated ears are a bit unset tling. Marcia Hupp, The Ferguson Li brary, Stamford, Conn.

Turning up his nose at his usual plate of carrots, Mr. Rabbit sets off to find out what other animals eat. Nothing his neighbors have appeals to finicky Mr. Rabbit either: not the frog's flies, the bird's worms or the monkey's bananas, and especially not the fox's favorite mealrabbit. When the fox lunges, Mr. Rabbit flees to the safety of his own kitchen, now minus his ears. He humbly fixes himself a pot of carrot stew, "because carrots make rabbits' ears grow." This resolution is a bit jarring: Mr. Rabbit's violent encounter with the fox lacks the absurdity to be outright funny and may leave young readers feeling unsettled or even spooked rather than amused. The illustrations are crayon-bright, though they don't endear Mr. Rabbit to us or engage us in his quest. Ages 5-8.
