Aptly titled, this is a book about the Europe frequented by New York Times correspondent Apple and, as such, is a reflection of his interests. Arranged by country, with about 40 percent of the text devoted to the United Kingdom, it tells much about European cuisine, art, history, and music and nothing at all about cruises, ski resorts, and rental villas. Apple writes enchanting prose on a variety of subjects: dining out in Budapest, Dostoevsky's haunts, Parisian bistros, Churchill's England, "unknown" places to visit, Wren's churches, and, best of all, a packing list that tops them all. This wonderful collection of advice, erudition, and anecdote will delight serious travelers everywhere. Ian Wallace, Agriculture Canada Lib., Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec
