ea. vol: illus. by Reg Cartwright. unpaged. CIP. Macmillan. 1988. PLB $10.95. PreSMy Cat and My Dog describe everyday events in the lives of these two household pets. The books are set up in a statement/response pattern: ``My cat caught a mouse. . .'' appears on one page, ``and then lost it'' is on the next. As these statements are on facing pages, there is no element of surprise or room for children's predictions. My Dog has a little more humor and interest (``My dog slept in a basket. . ./ until he ate it.'') There are no excess words in either book. The minimal texts are accompanied by equally minimal full-color illustrations. This simplicity is both a virtue and a fault. No more than one thing is ever going on at a time, and very young children will be able to focus attention. But the visual and textual content seems so slight that the books will not hold up for repeated readings and will probably not interest children over the age of two. The attractive illustrations show stylized figures against (almost too much) white space. More artfully done simple books, such as those by Ann Jonas and Eric Hill, are better choices for the very young. Lauralyn Persson, Wilmette Public Library, Ill.
