PreSchool-Grade 2-- As visually appealing as the ``Eyewitness'' and ``Eyewitness Jr.'' books (Knopf), but aimed at a younger audience, these titles each contain eight two-page spreads showing large, clear photographs strikingly accentuated against white backgrounds with a few smaller drawings that give other views or details of the object. Some of these pictures--the door handle of a convertible--are superficial, while others call attention to interesting aspects of the featured subject, such as the scales of a crocodile. Attractive covers, borders, and endpapers, along with thick sturdy pages, round out a winning visual package. The simple texts offer brief facts about each photograph; while most children will not understand ``gas mileage,'' others will want more on the relative sizes of the dinosaurs. In most cases, though, there is just enough to satisfy readers or listeners while they pore over the exciting illustrations.
