About the Author

M. M. Ragz is the author of seven novels for young readers, including Eyeballs for Breakfast. Before becoming a full-time writer, she worked as an English teacher and writing coordinator in the Stamford public-school system. When she's not writing or teaching, she enjoys quilting, watercolor painting, gardening, and spending time with her three sons, Ken, P. T., and Michael, and her grandchildren, Samantha and Daniel. She lives in Monroe, Connecticut, with her husband, Phil.

PreSchool-Grade 2-Appealing, cartoon-style illustrations enhance this slight story. Nicholas, who resides in Heaven, Level One, forgets the admonitions of the Guardian Angels and follows his dog Comet through a hole in the Heavenly Hedge. He suddenly finds himself riding up a golden staircase to Level Nine. Here he is introduced to a litany of saints/angels led by crotchety old Saint Sebastian. The Ruling Council of Angels doesn't know what to do with a lost boy and his dog, so they are allowed to remain temporarily, helping in St. Bridget's struggling rainbow garden, observing the industrious activity of the other celestial residents, and sharing their distress at the horrible noise made by a set of broken bells. When he instigates a cloudball fight and the ensuing fun results in some miraculous transformations, Nicholas is asked to stay. Instead, he chooses to return to Level One by sliding down one of St. Bridget's revitalized rainbows. Amid the questionable fantasy/theology of this story, the art, somewhat reminiscent of the work of Julie Vivas and Kevin Hawkes, is delightful. Personalities are reflected in the faces of a multicultural band of angels who fly around Level Nine in a flurry of activity, while shaggy-haired, red-sneakered Nicholas, accompanied by his spotted (and winged) pup, makes mischief for St. Sebastian. But it is a much-changed St. Sebastian who predicts at the story's close that, "someday, when you become Saint Nicholas, perhaps you will give your gifts of joy and laughter to the whole world."-Marie Orlando, Suffolk Cooperative Library System, Bellport, NY

A whimsical book, on the order of the classic story of the littlest angel, this features a child-angel, Nicholas, and a dog, Comet, who have become lost in heaven. The pair ends up on Level Nine, the dwelling place of important angels--the ones who wax the moon and buff the sunbeams. Saint Sebastian, who is in charge, can't figure how to get the boy and his dog back home. In the meantime, Nicholas gets into mischief: a giant bank of clouds, looking every bit like drifts of snow, has Nicholas lobbing handfuls at passing angels. Soon everyone joins in the cloud fight, prompting the heavenly bells, which lately only clanged and banged, to ring as beautifully as they used to. It seems the angels just needed a little preposterous fun in their everlasting lives. A humorous yarn with brightly colored, laugh-aloud pictures, this may just become a favorite.
