Gr 3-5-A clearly written, vivid text combined with striking color photographs results in a fascinating study of these creatures. Emphasis is more on the outside-behavior, physical description, and environment-than on the inside of these animals. However, there is an informative section illustrated with an X ray and photographs from dissections discussing internal anatomy and physiology. The author effectively uses questions and answers to involve readers, and a section at the end of the book called "Looking Back" encourages them to analyze photographs and draw conclusions about what they read. This will be a useful source for reports and of interest to browsers.

Gr. 2-4. There's a lot of information in this new entry in Markle's ongoing series. Children will learn, for example, that some rats and mice can jump seven times their body length, that their huge front teeth can gnaw through bone or wire, and that they lose heat through their tails. Kids will also discover how the rodents fit in the chain of nature. The full-color, close-up photos are exceptionally good, and kids will enjoy revisiting them to answer the "Looking Back" questions at the end of the book. A combined glossary-index is appended.
