Passing the sleepy cat, climbing the sleepy staircase, and saying "good night" to the sleepy parents, a child prepares for a night of dreams, in a gentle bedtime tale by the author of The Forest Child.

Marni McGee is the author of several warm and loving picture books, including the bestseller The Forest Child. Her poetry has been published in Cricket, the Magazine for Children and has been included in anthologies by Myra Cohn Livingston. She is the mother of two grown children and lives with her husband in California.
PreS-A steady-patterned rhythm leads readers through this melodic mood piece, which relies on rhyme and a heavy repetition of the word "sleepy." A father carries a curly headed cherub up the stairs to the child's room. They rock, they gaze out the window, they read, until finally the toddler is placed in bed sound asleep. The last line, "Sleepy, sleepy me!" seems jarring and totally unnecessary. The illustrations are focused and soothing. The flowing charcoal outlines add a looseness and immediacy to the childlike watercolors. There are lots of close-ups-everything seems big, overstuffed, and cuddly; even the moon and stars have simple, sleepy faces. However, while the text is presumably lulling the little one slowly toward sleep, the youngster appears to be out for the count on daddy's shoulder early on. It also seems odd that such a young child would sleep in a bed rather than a crib. The lack of attention to detail makes this book ultimately unsuccessful.
