Boswell the cat brings bad luck to everyone he meets, including a nasty witch with mean intentions

Kindergarten-Grade 3-If Boswell the black cat "...rubbed himself against the milkmaid's legs...down she would go, spilling her milk onto the road." If he meowed at the cobbler, asking for a scratch behind the ears, the cobbler "...would hammer his thumb instead of a shoe." In short, no matter how friendly, Boswell is a bad luck cat-until the witch who terrorizes the villagers adopts him for her evil purposes and finds that his bad luck has neutralized her curses. Lively full-color folksy illustrations in pen, ink, and acrylics reveal a village in the style of medieval Europe. Dynamic composition, design, and effective use of white space reinforce the vibrant energy of the townspeople. The text, full of colorful verbs and plenty of action, is a fine complement. This will be a terrific read-aloud selection or a pleasure for independent readers. It joins the ranks of other well-loved black cat picture books, including Natalie Savage Carlson's Spooky Night (Lothrop, 1982) and Paul Galdone's King of the Cats (Clarion, 1985).
