Grade 1-4-The author of Everything I Know about Pirates (S & S, 2000) returns to tackle another popular topic. Told from the point of view of a boy whose mother calls him "one of the best story-maker-uppers ever," this guidebook offers descriptions of the various types of monsters, from the common "Under-the-Bed" types to the more dangerous school monsters to "Closet Monsters" that rip your clothes during the night and the outdoor variety such as "Big Foot." A "Handy Monster Avoidance Chart" answers the question, "How much light does it take to make a monster disappear?" and gives tips ranging from opening the bedroom door "just a crack" for minor scares to "turning on every light in the room and having a grown-up look under your bed," guaranteed to get rid of any creature. Using the "Official Mad Scientist Monster Maker," youngsters will have lots of fun creating names for their own fiends and ogres. Lichtenheld's cartoons, rendered in "ink, colored pencil, crayon, gouache, watercolor, and raspberry PEZR," feature lots of dialogue bubbles and humorous hidden touches. With irreverent humor and lots of slapstick, this silly guide is sure to be a hit with kids.
