PreSchool-Grade 2–The two friends from Kapow! (S & S, 2004) return in an adventure set at the seashore. Although the children are itching to head for the water, the boy's mother makes them stay on the beach to watch his little brother. Changing into the Incredible American Eagle and the Amazing Bug Lady, the duo dubs the younger sibling Manphibian and defeats him by popping his sea-serpent float. With his feelings hurt, he stalks off to sit alone. Unconcerned, the older children continue to play, but when a bully gives them a rough time, they finally understand how the younger boy feels and enlist Manphibian's help in besting the bad guy. The story is told entirely through dialogue balloons and dynamic cartoon artwork. Rather tame, realistic scenes of the ordinary-looking children alternate with action-packed spreads starring their muscle-bound, gracefully athletic, and incredibly courageous alter egos. Rendered in refreshingly bright colors, these comic-book-style scenes are filled with motion, excitement, and even the appropriate exclamations ("FA-ZOOM"). The switches between daily life and a vividly realized imaginary world are easy to follow, and the action-packed presentation eases the lesson on sibling relationships.– Joy Fleishhacker, School Library Journal

PreS-Gr. 2. With a format similar to his previous comic-strip-cum-picture-book, KAPOW! (2004), O'Connor takes readers on a trip to the beach. When a boy and a girl are forced to stay out of the water and watch the boy's little brother, they decide to pop the younger kid's float. Then a bigger kid comes along and steals their crab; the kids must apologize to their little brother and team up to get back at the big kid. A message-heavy story, maybe, but the art makes it exciting. Single-page panels telling the story are interrupted by double-page spreads in which the kids become superheroes--avoiding gigantic supercrabs or zapping the big, Hulk-like uberbully with amazing electric-eel powers. This is both fun and empowering; kids will enjoy the story's switches from the everyday world to the exciting land of muscled, powerful superheroes--a transformation that any child who has ever worn Superman Underoos will find familiar.
