Grade 2-6 As in A Song in Stone (Crowell, 1983), Hopkins and Audette have combined talents to produce a fresh view of the ordinary. Poets include Eve Merriam, David McCord, Valerie Worth, and Myra Cohn Livingston; subjects include ``Garbage Truck,'' ``Tractor,'' and ``Lawnmower.'' Of the 18 modern poems, 6 can be found in books that are still in print. All testify to Hopkins' sure sense as a compiler. The crisp typeface, clean black-and-white photos, and central placement of poems on the page create a book as well-engineered as the machines themselves. ``A much of motors/ an over of drives'' (``Parking Lot Full'' by Eve Merriam) but not a single verbosity of verse.
