PreSchool-Grade 1-- The flood motif is a universal theme in myths and folktales, and this adaptation of a Peruvian myth (inspired by a collection of myths from the northeastern region of Peru) follows a well-known pattern. A farmer's llama dreams of the destruction of the world by flood and warns his master. The family goes to the top of Mt. Willka Qutu and joins all the animals of the world. After five days of flooding they all descend again to begin building a new life. Although the illustrations are colorful and detailed--e.g., the geometric patterning of the Indian clothing, the red yarn tassels in the llamas' ears, the Andean flute lying on a rock--they do not capture the stark contrasts of Peruvian landscapes. The incredibly blue sky of Andean altitudes is missing, and the wild, untamed, and untamable nature of the huge mountains, rocks, and tumbling rivers is muted and pastel, the opposite of Peru. --Frances E.
