Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. Literary criticism. Uncommon scholarly volume exploring style in Shakespeare's Hamlet. Contents in three parts: Imagery; Staging & Structure; Dramatic Character. With printed footnotes. Includes references, plus index. NOTE: Interesting Shakespearean connection - This copy has a withdrawn library printed bookplate label to front pastedown for "The Walter Hampden Memorial Library at The Players, New York (Theatre Library Association)". For 27 years, Walter Hampden was president of the Players' Club. The club's library is named for him. An American actor & theatre manager, Hampden (1879-1955) became noted for his Shakespearean roles, & played Hamlet & Henry V on Broadway. He made his TV debut in 1949, playing Macbeth for the last time at the age of 69. The Players Club is a social club founded in New York City by the noted 19th-century Shakespearean actor Edwin Booth (Edwin's younger brother John Wilkes, also an actor, assassinated Abraham Lincoln). From the introduction: "Style has generally been neglected by critics of Shakespeare, as if it could only be studied impressionistically as a branch of belletristics, or objectively as an aspect of linguistic description. I steer a middle course between the schools of admiration and of computation, although I am certainly closer to the former. I choose to interpret style in its widest sense, which includes all the means of expression used by an author to accomplish his purposes". Printed in the USA. Bound in publisher's original brown cloth with bright gilt lettering to spine. No dustjacket. Ex-library copy with NO library markings (apart from the label to front pastedown), otherwise a FINE very nice clean tight solid hardcover copy. 333pp. Scarce title, & a unique copy with interesting Shakespearean connection.
