Synopsis

The Move into Writing (MIW) program provides direct, systematic instruction in lower case letter formation to enable students to become proficient in the task of handwriting. The program uses a multisensory framework that integrates handwriting instruction with phonemic awareness. Engaging stories and rich visual animations promote recall of the sequence of movements required to form the letters. Simply put, this is a great tool for teaching handwriting in a motivating and meaningful way!

WHY IT WORKS:
1) MIW prioritizes the teaching of lower case letters. This is vital because lower case letters comprise 98% of written content. These letters are also consistent with the writing style children encounter in reading texts.
2) MIW encourages learning through multiple sensory channels. Letters are sorted into 5 movement groups by their initial pencil stroke. Movement strokes are reinforced through finger tracing, songs, animations and pencil-and-paper activities.
3) Letters are formed using continuous strokes i.e. with minimal lifting of the pencil from the paper which promotes left-to-right directionality and reduces reversals.
4) MIW provides integrated review and practice to improve motor memory. The workbook has a practice page for each letter as well as review activities at the end of each section which allows students to gain fluency.
